| A stoma is an artificial
opening on the abdomen produced surgically for the purpose
of diverting human waste (faeces or urine) from the body.
In general, there are three types of stoma : colostomy,
ileostomy and urostomy. A bag is worn over the stoma to
collect the human waste.
Apart from having to deal with
stoma bag, ostomates (stoma patients) are no different
from other people in appearance and working ability.
With the proper stoma care, support and encouragement
from families and friends, ostomates can recover and
re-integrate into society very soon after surgery.
